A major factor contributing to the alarming air pollution of our country is public transportation. Whereas public transportation is an important factor to urban sustainability, it also creates nuisance by giving rise to air and noise pollution. The public transport consists of some main factors such as accessibility, affordability, connectivity and planning with the environment in mind.

By using public transport judiciously and more efficiently, it can produce significantly less air pollution per passenger per mile than a standard car carrying a single driver. Buses emit less carbon monoxide per passenger per mile than an automobile with a single occupant. Metro is a very good and accessible source of public transportation which doesn’t create pollution at all. Along with reducing air pollution, public transportation is also more fuel efficient, which contributes to an overall decrease in the amount of energy necessary for transportation.

Public transportation can convey many more people in much less space than individual vehicles, which helps to keep lower traffic congestion, which in turn reduces air pollution from idling vehicles, and helps riders avoid the stress that comes from daily driving in highly congested areas.

Public transportation is also linked with healthier lifestyles, as people who use public transportation are supposed to get more physical activity per day than those who don’t, just from walking to and from their transit stops and their final destination.
