Debate on Animals Should Not Be Used for Drug Development or Medical Research

Animals should not be used for drug development or medical research. Express your views either for or against this statement.

For the Statement

Who is the first one in drinking a new type of Coke or PepsiCo? Who is the first one in taking a tablet of aspirin? Who is the first one in using shampoos? Did you know all these things? The one I’m referring to is the animals – cat, rabbit, rat and so on – which are widely and cruelly used in various kinds of scientific researches and millions of them die every year. Every life created by God is equal. Bearing that in mind, a huge number of people have been no-animal testing users.

Experiments on animals are protective walls for human beings’ health. They are routinely cut open, poisoned and then caged in for weeks, months or even years. Some animals are often given diseases to see whether a new drug will work or whether it has side effects. And we often see kitten cats or baby rabbits being separated from their mothers, on TV too. This is not moral. Every year thousands of animals are treated or killed for testing new drugs and medical research.

It is reported that there are 3 million animals who die annually in scientific researches in UK. The number is about 115 million in America. Statistics show that animals die for scientific research every three seconds. But why doesn’t the government do anything about this? The answer is simple; money. From animal breeders to companies, from companies to researchers, from researchers to governments, from governments to companies, animals used in experiments, have already become an industry wearing a ‘shining golden coat.’ Each player benefits a lot.

Undoubtedly, animal testing brings benefits to medical research, yet these innocent beings suffer a lot. I think that with the development of gene science, the involvement of animals for drugs etc. should be reduced or even excluded in future.

Against the Statement

I totally disagree to the statement– “Animals should not be used for drug development or medical research”. Removing animals completely from the lab would impede our understanding of health and disease, and consequently affect the development of new vital treatments.

Although, sometimes these studies do reduce the quality of life of these animals, thorough regulations are done to ensure that, they are carried out in a human way.

Medical research involving animals has dramatically improved the health of the human race. Without animal testing, it would be impossible to check side effects of vaccines and drugs. And many of modern vaccines were developed using animal testing.

To do direct test on humans, would be too risky and almost impossible. For now, animal testing is a necessary research tool. We can’t figure out other methods to ensure the safety of medical drugs and procedures.

Furthermore, using animal testing is beneficial for science to keep control of dangerous diseases and invent new medical methods. New methodologies could be useful and beneficial not only to people but also to the ecosystem as well. To illustrate, scientists help certain species to survive and heal sick or injured animals.

Undoubtedly, animal testing brings many benefits to medical research in the scope of improving drugs.
