A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, thing, action, quality or feeling. Nouns are classified into give kinds:
- A proper noun denotes a particular person, place, animal or thing. Example: Atlanta, Statue of Liberty
- A common noun names general things. Example: girls, men, birds, cities
- A collective noun is the name given to a group of people or things. Example: bouquet, army, parliament, bunch
- An abstract noun names qualities in persons, animals or things. Example: judgement, youth, beauty, love.
- A material noun names something we can see and touch – a substance, a material or something used for making things. Example: mud, paper, silk, wheat
