What is a Proper Noun?

A proper noun gives a name to a particular place, person or thing to differentiate it out from the others of its class.

Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter. The number and gender of proper nouns cannot be changed though we can say Sundays, Mondays, and so on. They can be used as the subject or an object in a sentence.

Name of People: George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison etc.

Name of Place: England, Australia, London, New York, India etc.

Name of Company: Ford, Sony, Suzuki, Apple, Samsung etc.

Name of Month: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October November, December.

Name of Day: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Name of Book: War and Peace, Great Expectations, The Brothers Karamazov, Ulysses, The Great Gatsby etc.

Name of Building: Burj Khalifa, The White House, Empire State Building, Willis Tower, Shanghai Tower etc.

Name of Religion: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism etc.

Name of Ocean: Southern Ocean, ‎Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean etc.

Name of Mountain: Mount Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, MakaluCho, OyuCho, Dhaulagiri etc.

Name of Language: English, Hindi, Sanskrit, French, German, Italian etc.

Name of Festival: Christmas, Diwali, Easter, Thanksgiving, Holi etc .
