Chess in Through the Looking-Glass

Chess plays an important role in the Looking- Glass world, Alice is a pawn in the beginning of the game. She has little or no power and a limited perspective of the world around her. In a game of chess there are predetermined rules that must be followed. Alice finds herself with little control over the trajectory of her life, she finds that external factors influence the choices that she makes. She realizes that every step she takes towards her goal occur because of external forces acting upon her. Her life seems already pre-determined and though she might not want to follow the rules, there is nothing she can do to stop the external forces acting upon her. Chess in Looking-Glass is not just a game anymore but becomes a reality in Alice’s life as she comes across hurdles in every square that is out of her control.
