Essay on Overuse of Fertilizers and Pesticides

Overuse of Fertilizers and Pesticides

An increasing number of mouths have to be fed in view of increasing population, but it is also necessary to maintain ecological balance; these two activities should go hand in hand. Our country has gained self-sufficiency in the production of food crops. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides boosts up agricultural production. But all is not well that ends well.

The excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides creates large-scale soil pollution. Science says that a healthy soil depends on bacteria, fungus etc. which withstand wastes in the soil and release nutrients. These nutrients help the plants to grow in keeping with the nature. However, the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides kills these friends of the soil. Consequently, the land loses its fertility. Besides, many fatal diseases are caused due to it.

So the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides should be curbed. The use of compost and other bio-products as manure is the need of the hour. Farmers should be encouraged to use eco-friendly fertilizers only, but then the vicious cycle of starving mouths will occur. So, every step must be taken to bring our increasing population under control.
